Raising chickens backyard style – My Story.

I never thought that raising chickens backyard style was possible in the city. I thought that chickens belonged on farms and in the country, not in suburbs or even the city. I was wrong because I had the wrong information and until I found the right information, I was missing out on all the benefits of having your own urban chicken flock. Raising poultry is possible in the city.

There is a lot of interest in raising backyard chickens today but for most of us there are still a lot of questions. I needed to get answers before starting my own flock. Is it legal to have urban chickens? What do they eat? How do you take care of them? Are they noisy? And finally, what kind of shelter do they need?

I started doing research. I found our that many cities now say it’s ok to have a flock of chickens and that more and more are considering it. They eat chicken food which is easy to get and inexpensive– as well as garden bugs helping you keep down the bugs without chemicals. They are environmentally friendly.  They require very little care, just regular feeding and water. They do need shelter -chicken coops and maybe a chicken pen if you don’t want them running lose in your yard. (I like seeing them about their business and they always stay close to home.) You need to protect them from predators and the elements and they like a quiet place to lay their eggs.

So my big hangup to getting started was the chicken coop. I found lots of people who would sell me coops and they were very fancy ones but not at all cheap. Way out of line for an average guy who just wanted to have a few chickens and some delicious, fresh and healthy eggs. What I was looking for was an easy chicken coop that I could build myself. I am not a carpenter or woodworker and I just have the average do-it-yourself tools at home. Well I found what I was looking for. I found several chicken coop building plans and a lot of information that told me what I needed to start my flock.

So what is it like having my own chickens – urban backyard chickens? I have to say that it is way better than I had expected. My chickens are quiet (I have only hens) and they are even friendly. I have given them names and one even likes to sit on my lap. Who would have thought?

So if you are an average guy like me with a little do it yourself in you and you want the lifestyle of having your own backyard chickens, my recommendation is that you check out more information at the best place I have found for raising chickens backyard style information.
